Cliff Burton was not a bass player. The bass guitar was another one of his appendages. He was dominating the stage. Had Metallica not expelled Dave Mustaine James Hetfield would have never found his inner barbarian to become a true front man.
Would have been interesting to hear 40 years of Metallica with Mustaine, but I gotta say , in my late teens, Rust In Peace & Countdown to Extinction I loved, more than the, black Metallica album, and Peace Sells is good, So Far So Good So What has some underrated songs. I know tor years Dave talks about how it effected him, but we wouldn't have heard Megadeth
There's an alternate timeline where they didn't kick Dave out and instead of Cliff passing in 1986 we had Mr. Mustaine and Lars and James dying in a shootout. The plus side is that while we didn't get Creeping Death or Trapped under Ice, but the second and third albums were like amalgamations of the ones we know with Megadeth's first two albums and we also didn't get the post cliff crap that Lars helped 'produce'. By now Cliff Burton would be like a sort of hippie Rick Rubin with multiple Grammy's and a phone book worth of collaborations and coproductions.
2:39 godamn....this to me, has always been the best 10 seconds of cliff on video, besides day on the green(written in blue 🔵) when the wind is whipping his hair during the intro to bell tolls...absolutely astounding, and that bend he does.....jeez. Never has anybody ever played a heehaw back country hillbilly metal semi-bluegrass banjo-esque part on a distorted rickenbacker, and never will anybody ever again play that powerfully, thumb over the top hemdrix style, strumming downward with the whole hand, strident stance, vibrato, mop of hair in towe....as he feels the power pulsing through his picking hand The world was robbed for sure. Music aside, he was just a young dude who didn't deserve his fate while sleeping
Seeing Cliff on this old tape, reminds me a little of guys like Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull... A Crazy-genious-uncontrollable force who wants to eat the world with every expression. His loss was a terrible tragedy for the music.
Ultimate metallica roster: Lead bass: cliff burton Rythm bass: Jason newstead Lead guitar: kirk hammett Rythm guitar: dave mustaine Vocals: james hetfield Lars on drums
It was a toss up between cliff and Kirk for who would be the satanic sacrifice and sadly cliff got the shortest straw, someone had to die for this band to be legendary. Cliff was amazing so is Kirk! If James and Lars never made the deal they would have far surpassed their fame now if they only trusted in the one and only true God Jesus Christ!!!! But JAMES had a sore taste in his mouth because his mother passed away. When she believed in Christ Jesus took her home. He was pissed. I have prayed for James Hetfield Kirk, Hammett, Lars Ulrich, and now Robert Trujillo I still think Jason Newstead was 1 million times better than Robert Trujillo.
This was indeed the best lineup, however Dave had to be let go because we needed Megadeth to be antithesis to what Metallica became after Cliff passed.
Man! 1983. I can't help but wonder what James, Lars, and even Dave think about when they see these old videos. Also, they all have kids now, yes? I'd love to see a reaction video of their kids watching these performances.
Can you imagine how history would have played out if these four guys would have stayed together throughout the entire life of Metallica? First off there would be no Megadeth, oh wait I don't want to think about that. 🤯
It's sad to think that from the original Metallica lineup only Lars and James remain :(
He did so much for only being here 24yrs.
Total genius like more cliff skills than mick taylor despite one is guitar and the oher played the bass.
gracias por todo... Te AMLO ❤❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Adiós AMLO Gracias por todo ❤️

Wait, so there WAS a time when Lars didn't sound like shit? I thought that was just a myth.
That was hands down the worst bass I have ever heard.
Cliff Burton is a bass deity!
And Dave
James & lars were definitely jelous
Una dimensión en la que sacan a Mustein y Cliff y forman juntos la nueva banda
Old school Metallica was the best! Then came Pantera .... ahhh, I miss the old days.

Here is 1 real musician among a bunch of junkies in a band.

rip to cliff
Te amo amblo
This is the best Metallica line up. No ifs or buts 🤘

9:29 why does it just end on a picture of Cliff?
0:00→Interview 0:59→Cliff Bass solo 5:22→ whiplash start!!!
8:10 OMG, James screams pretty the same of studio version.
Dave: "How would you f**kheads like to meet Cliff Burton? The major rager, on the 4-string motherf**ker,"
I love cliff so much 😭🫶🏽
2024 calling for this lineup again
Ultimate metallica roster: Lead bass: cliff burton Rythm bass: Jason newstead Lead guitar: kirk hammett Rythm guitar: dave mustaine Vocals: james hetfield Lars on drums
Tão estranho olhar a direita e não ver o belo Kirk Hammet. :D
The first Metallica is a legend, really.
BASS SOLO, TAKE 1

Imagine this lineup w Dave Lombardo
When dave and cliff leav forsure the metal has gone only lica ramain 🤣😂
I love that cliff said "rush"
Exente vidio, tenía 4 años más menos, y el la ver ion original
i wish Jason Newstead was still in the band. They would be a lot more cooler
Im 17 years old and a big Metallica fan, I wish i was alive in the 80s. Seems like such a wild time to be alive.
dave mustaine is too drunk to solo for whiplash, sounds shit through the solo
Cliff AND Dave forever number one!
Kids these days dont realize how hard it was to sneak an 87 pound camcorder into a show back in the day.
This was indeed the best lineup, however Dave had to be let go because we needed Megadeth to be antithesis to what Metallica became after Cliff passed.

Cliff: ZZ TOP😉
RUSH
this is amazing i keep coming back
back when Dave and James both kind of Fronted the band... I guess Dave did alot of the talking back then.
There’s always the What If when it comes to if Cliff and Dave were still in the band to this day… That will always be haunting.
From a guy that grew up listening to them. I appreciate the gift of this video. 🦀
